I am confident that Wycombe District Council WILL come round to support Fairtrade in the fullness of time - but not whilst it is run under the grotesque partisanship of Conservative Leader Cllr Lesley Clarke and her poodles (The Conservatives treated it as a 'whipped' vote, so all the Conservatives obediently voted Fairtrade down, whatever personal opinions they may claim to have held in its favour!). In 2011 there will be fresh elections for Wycombe District Council, just in time for when it will be possible for a fresh attempt at seeking Fairtrade status for the town. If you want a better outcome for Fairtrade in 2011, then the lesson is to vote for councillors who will support it - that seems to me to mean voting Liberal Democrat

I find it absolutely shameful and extraordinary that the Conservative Party on Wycombe District Council, led by Cllr Lesley Clarke, should oppose and actively block Fairtrade status for Wycombe in the way that they have done.

Cllr Clarke has in the past led one to suspect that she is a Christian (at any rate she is on record as describing atheists as "godless heathens"), so what particular part of Scripture and Bible teaching has she been drawing upon to regard fair dealing and a non-exploitative relationship with Third World producers as being out of kilter with Christian values? How on earth does she reconcile her faith with the inane and stupid comment she made that Fairtrade is "a whim". She, and her apologists in the local Conservative Party, ought to have the good grace and courage to come on this website and account for themselves, and answer the points that i have made!

It is an absolute scandal that the controlling Conservative group on Wycombe District Council voted to oppose Fairtrade status!

The argument that it would "cost too much" was neatly countered by LibDem councilllor Brian Pollock, who had done some research to discover that some fairtrade items could be sourced cheaper than the non-fairtrade items from the Council's existing supplier! He then followed this up by offering that any residual additional cost to the Council would be paid for BY the LibDem councillors!! There woud therefore be NO cost implications to the Council.

Having demolished that (in any case extraordinarily weak) argument against Fairtrade, the council then had a vote on it and, guess what, the Tories voted en bloc AGAINST FairTrade anyway - thus revealing unmasked their true contempt fro the Fairtrade movement and concept.

Their actions shamed the town, and should be roundly condemned!

In this day and age we all should be trying to support Fairtrade and public institutions should reflect this. Businesses, councils, churches all have an ethical responsibility to support this campaign. Wycombe distict will come round eventually when they discover that informed public opinion is on the side of Fairtrade.

I too am appalled and dismayed that Ms Clarke dismissed the time and effort the steering group had put into preparing the statement and of course turning up to be heard. The steering group is made up of volunteers expending time and energy to spread the Fair Trade word so Wycombe can obtain the proud status. To be dismissed in such a way is truly outrageous behaviour and shows lack of respect and foresight for such an important cause.

I am watching this space closely and fully support the effort the steering group in their dedicated cause.
